The Pillars of the Earth The answer lies in the book The Pillars of the Earth by popular novelist Ken Follett and the subsequent TV series adaptation. Follett’s epic 1000+ page yarn tells the story of the building of a 12th century English cathedral, supposedly based on Salisbury Cathedral and Wells Cathedral.

The pillars of the earth .. How many and where are they ?

In the book of Exodus (chapter 26) God gave very very specific instructions, down to the smallest detail on how and with what they were to buildthe Tabernacle in the wilderness. Nothing was to be added to the design or taken from it, it had to be followed to the letter. Why was God such a stickler about this? What difference does it make? Well, as with many things in the Old Testament, things served a double purpose; one was literal, and the other symbolic, as a means to demonstrate a spiritual or Heavenly reality. And so it is with the Tabernacle in the wilderness. Let us look at the design.

For the longest time Biblical scholars and theologians have leaned to their own understanding and gave a depiction of what the Tabernacle looked like, and that interpretation was not ever tested to see if it actually stood up to what the Bible actually says, and so it stayed that way, unchallenged, until a guy called Andy Hoy came along,and being a structural engineer by trade, and a Christian, he decided to have a closer look at the popularized design of a rectangular structure because in order for it to work that way guy wires had to be added for stability so it wouldn't be blown over in the first strong desert wind; this rectangular structure is still in all the books to this day as being the correct depiction that was endorsed by modern Biblical scholars and theologians.Boy, were they wrong ! Their model, it turns out, was utterly flawed and not in keeping with what God commanded at all,which is to be expected when people lean to their own understanding and don't prayerfully seek God's plan, so Andy Hoy set about to follow the God-given design to the letter and in the process turned the theological world on it's proverbial head. Not only did the final product not look at all like the long held depiction of what the Tabernacle looked like, but it turned out radically different, the importance of which we will discuss shortly, but first let us look at the design.

In the design of the Tabernacle in the wilderness God, Who does not waste time with inacuracies, was demonstrating His design for the earth,right down to the top vent. The design of the Tabernacle exactly replicates the domed firmament, which to the Hebrews wasn't an earth shattering revelation as they already knew the earth to be a level plane with a solid domed firmament, so when the design of the Tabernacle was given it was completely reasonable to them for it to be as such. A type of miniature version of the Creation model, right down to the gateway to Heaven that resides behind Polaris, the north star. As a side note, Polaris is the only 'star' that is fixed while all others rotate around it. The Book of Enoch describes thatwhat surrounds the throne of God is living fire, which is symbolized by the pillar of fire in the wilderness.

Genesis chapter 1 speaks of the firmament being set to divide the waters from the waters (V6-7) and that the appearance was that of molten looking glass(Job 37:18). Furthermore, Ezekiel makes mention of this as well; 'And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above.' - Eze 1:22 . In other places it refers to the firmament being like a tent (Isaiah 40:22).

Related to this we have Pslams 19:1-4 'The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun'.speaking of the Genesis account of the sun, moon and luminaries being set IN the firmament of Heaven, and not outside of it somewhere off into 'space'.

The Bible also says that the world is set on foundations: 'Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened?(Antarctica?) or who laid the corner stone thereof;'- Job 36: 4-6

Now we will examine Scripture on 'pillars'.

Job 9:6 'Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.'
1 Sam 2:8 '..for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them.'

What is with the pillars ? What are they for and what do they do ? They are there to hold up the foundations of the earth according to the Bible.(1 Sam 2:8 above). When the earth was created it was set on foundations and those foundations are held up by pillars. But why put the foundations on pillars at all? The answer lies in 2Pe 3:5 '..the earth standing out of the water and in the water:' It is to elevate the foundations so that the earth would not be submergedin the waters below.

Psalm 104:5: “Thou didst fix the earth on its foundation so that it never can be shaken.”
Ps102:25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.

In the beginning of Genesis it says that the firmament was created to separate the waters from the waters.

Genesis 1:6-9 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

In our rendition we have set the world on foundations with a domed firmament, as many ancient texts as well as the Bible show, but we wanted to show a specific number of pillars supporting the foundations, and not just a random number. The Bible is not specific on the number or size of these 'pillars', but we can use our God given senses and Scripture for guidance and come up with a decent rendition.

Revelation 7:1 'And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth:'
Luke 13:29 'And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.'
Isaiah 11:12 'And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.'

Our model has 4 pillars, and only 4. One set at the 12 o'clock position and the others at the 9, 6 and 3 o'clock positions, like that found on a clock. Why 4 ? Because when placed at the clock face positions under the flat earth and you draw a line between them you end up with what ? A square, or 4 corners.
